Cast Some Light on Your Outdoor Living Area by Bonnie P Carrier
Lighting is not just for the inside of a home and it’s no longer just something to light the front door. Outdoor Lighting has really come a long way from the simple fixture that has always hung next to the front door of a home.
Yes, you still have those fixtures but they are a lot more decorative and your not limited to just hanging it next to the door.
Hanging pendants are now available for outdoor use, in a variety of styles and finishes. If you have a covered porch or patio consider using a hanging light over your outdoors dining table.
Wall mounted lights are also available in many varieties and can also be used as an outdoor lighting source around your patio or deck.
Again the styles are vast ranging from Traditional, Coach Style and Arts & Crafts. There are also several types of finishes available

Floor & Table lamps are also available now for outdoor use. When purchasing these if they are going to be used in an unprotected area please make sure the instructions clearly state that they have sealed shades and waterproof switches.
Torches are another option for lighting the outdoors. You’ll find small table styles and large pole types that go into the ground. Lined around a walk way or the patio they can give a tropical feel to outdoor entertaining.
Another idea for lighting a patio or deck would be to use umbrella lights. These can be really fun with the variety of styles from plain lights to a theme.
Gardens and walkways are another area you may want to consider lighting. Not only will this make it possible to safely walk around at night you will also have the benefit of being able to see and enjoy your gardens in a whole different light.
Path lights are a good option for this type of light project. These typically are low-voltage lights that attach to a mounting stake which is then pushed into the ground. The cable for these lights can be run along the ground covered by mulch or buried in a trench.
Here again there are many different styles; pagoda, mission, arts & crafts and tiffany, you can also get more decorative in the shape of flowers, leaves and animal shapes.
Another option is by using the new solar fixtures; these also come in a wide rage of styles and finishes. As there is no wiring need they are perfect for lining a walk way or garden path and the sun by doing its job during the day will provide a beautiful glow to the evening.
When you put the time into creating a relaxing retreat in your yard, lighting makes it possible to use and enjoy it no matter what time of day it is.
