What’s Happening In The Month of March

March is Women’s History Month

An annual declared month that highlights contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. The theme for 2010 will be ‘Writing Women Back into History’.

Below are several quotes from three women that are personal favorites of mine.

Katharine Hepburn - American actress of film, television and stage.

  • I never lose sight of the fact that just being is fun.
  • If you always do what interests you at least one person is pleased.

Katharine Graham - Publisher.  She led her family's newspaper, The Washington Post for more than two decades.

  • To love what you do and feel that it matters – how could anything be more fun.
  • A mistake is simply another way of doing things.

Julia Child - Chef, author, and television personality. She introduced French cuisine and cooking techniques through her cookbooks and television show.

  • Dining with one’s friends and beloved family is certainly one of life’s primal and most innocent delights, one that is both satisfying and eternal.
  • Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.

There are many women that I admire for many different reasons however, these particular three I find fascinating. They began their careers during a time when men dominated the workforce. They fought for what they wanted, stayed true to themselves and never gave up.

If you’re interested in reading more about these extraordinary women, I suggest the following books.

I have read the three listed above – hardcover of course – and highly recommend them. Their stories and actions stand as examples for all women that anything is possible.

FYI:
  • Katharine Graham was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002. In 1998 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in biography for “Personal History”
  • Julia Child was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1993 she received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University, which read in part “A Harvard friend and neighbor who has filled the air with common sense and uncommon scents, long may her soufflés rise”.

More Dates On March’s Calendar

March 1st - National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day

The first of March salutes America’s favorite sandwich spread.  How many of us didn’t grow up eating the ultimate PB & J sandwiches, I for one loved them as a kid and still do today.

A little peanut butter trivia

  • Americans eat 700 million pounds every year (3 lbs per person), which could theoretically cover the entire floor of the Grand Canyon
  • Americans on the West Coast prefer chunky peanut butter, whereas those in the East Coast like it creamy

  • The reason peanut butter sticks to your mouth is that its high protein content absorbs moisture
  • Creamy peanut butter can be used to remove chewing gum from clothes and hair
  • The world's largest peanut butter and jelly sandwich was created November 6th, 1993 in Peanut, Pennsylvania and was 40 ft long. It contained 150 lbs of peanut butter and 50 lbs of jelly.
  • 96% of people, when making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, put the peanut butter on before the jelly
  • Adults actually consume more peanut butter than kids

Peanut butter is also quite popular on crackers and celery , the ultimate recipe of course would be for peanut butter cookies although peanut butter pie runs a tight race.

So open a jar sit down with a spoon and enjoy while possibly remembering wonderful childhood memories.

March 2nd - Dr. Seuss Birthday

Theodor Seuss Geisel better known as Dr. Seuss was an American writer widely know for his wonderful children’s books. He published over sixty books, often characterized by imaginative characters and rhyme. His most celebrated books include the following bestsellers.

  • Green Eggs and Ham
  • The Cat in the Hat
  • One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
  • Fox in Socks
  • Hop on Pop

Dr Seuss Memorial Garden

The Dr Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden is located on the grounds of the Springfield Museums in Springfield Mass, where Dr. Seuss was born in 1904. The memorial was created with the hope of sparking imagination and creativity in a new generation.

March 17th - Saint Patrick’s Day when everyone is Irish for a Day.

March 28th - Palm Sunday

On Palm Sunday Christians celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. For many Christian churches, Palm Sunday, often referred to as "Passion Sunday," marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday.

March 30th - Passover

Passover (Pesach) celebrates the birth of the Jewish nation. Passover in 2010 will start on Tuesday, the 30th of March and will continue for 7 days until Monday, the 5th of April. Note that in the Jewish calendar, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Jews will celebrate Passover on the sunset of Monday, the 29th of March.

Enjoy the month of March and remember the first day of Spring is the 20th - Hurray.
