Wallpaper - A Realm Of Endless Decorating Possibilities                                                 by Bonnie P Carrier

Need a new decorative look for your walls, but want to do something different from the standard paint job, maybe it’s time to give wallpapering a try.

Wallpaper is a unique and lasting way to beautify your home and express your individual style.

Wallpaper, helps you make the most of your room's strong points, while masking its weaker features. For example:

      • Brightens a dark room
      • Adds character to a dull room
      • Warms up a room lacking architectural features
      • Creates a cozy atmosphere
      • Frames the room's best features
      • Reveals your personality more than any other wall treatment

In addition, wallpaper featuring certain patterns such as stripes and overall prints to perform optical illusions that make rooms that ordinarily look too long, too boxy or have low ceilings appear more proportionate.

Use it throughout the house. Today's wallpaper collections are much more user-friendly, with so many beautiful colors and patterns to chose from there’s something for just about any style or theme you maybe looking for.

Below you’ll find a list of the different styles of wallpaper and a brief description of each. Use each signally or get creative and use several styles together for a personal unique look.

  • Wallpaper Collections:                                                           Normally consist of two coordinating patterns plus a border. Generally collections are geared around some type of theme Sports, Folk Art, Ocean or Kitchens.
  • Wallpaper Murals:                                                                   This is a unique way to decorate just one wall in a living room, bedroom or a hallway. It’s a creative way to make a decorating change without papering the entire room.
  • Wallpaper Borders:                                                                   Here is an option that is by far the easiest way to use wallpaper. Borders can be used in a variety of ways, added to existing wallpapered or painted walls.                                                                                                          Place them around the top or around (simulating a chair rail) the middle of the room. Use them around the back splash in the kitchen or along the top of tile in the bath.
  • Wallie’s:                                                                                                                     A single cutouts of actual wallpaper that you apply to the wall by wetting the back with a damp sponge. You can’t get much easier than that. These can be found in a number of images from fruit to flowers to animals, which make them perfect for adding just a little decorative touch to any room.

Tip: If this is your first attempt with wallpaper, you may want to start with either a solid color or a simple pattern.

Be sure to ask family members or friends who may have hung wallpaper for help and advice. Besides, it’s always more fun doing decorating projects with a friend.

There are four basic styles that all wallpaper fall into. Listed below are the four styles with a brief description of each.

  • Geometric Patterns:                                                           Included here are plaids, stripes and grids. Large patterns add excitement and drama while small patterns create a subdued effect. Patterns with strong vertical lines make ceilings look higher.
  • Large Prints:                                                                                               This pattern will add the most visual interest to a room. They can also make a room seem smaller and feel more intimate.
  • Overall Print:                                                                         Because the pattern is tight, the eye blends the design together, minimizing pattern and emphasizing color. Overall prints can be used in any room.
  • Small Prints:                                                                         Just a touch of pattern is added to the overall background color, forming a subtle backdrop. This type of print is often used in kitchens, bathrooms and other small spaces.

Feel free to get as creative as you wish with patterns and color. Just because a sample book lists particular patterns and color together does not mean you can’t get creative. Just remember two things, Colors should be alike, but the scale should not.
