“Boone” - Tails Of A Kitten by Bonnie P. Carrier
He runs, jumps, leaps and bounces like there are springs on his paws. This is Boone, the latest addition to our family of four legged fur-babies. Boone joined our household nine months ago, he’s orange and white – a new color for us – with very large front paws, which sometimes makes walking a bit tricky.
In the beginning he spent most of his days sleeping in my daughters room away from our other pets. He definitely was not crazy about Toby our Sheltie and our other cat had absolutely no use for him.
Over time like most things this changed, Boone began venturing down stairs and little by little started settling into the routine of the house. One of the first priorities was to get him something to play with, well this turned out to be quite the undertaking. Keep in mind we had not had a kitten for sixteen years so everyone got into the act of buying toys for our new little man.
No matter who went to the store – and no matter what you originally went for – one thing was a must buy something cute for Boone. As I previously mentioned he’s already nine months old, so just use your imagination to envision the amount of things this one little kitten has to keep him occupied.
There are several bungee type toys, little mice with bells on their tails, balls made of various materials and colors, crinkly butterflies, more little mice and of course a multi-level house, which has been a life saver for our furniture.
So you may be wondering, does he actually play with all these toys? Sort of, his favorite are the bungee toys but what he really loves to do is pull all the toys out of his little house, wait for me to pick them up, put them away so he can do it all over again.
Boone and Toby have become quite good friends, they love to spend time chasing each other around the house. In fact another favorite pastime of Boone’s is to leap from the back of the couch or loveseat, literally fly through the air and land on Toby’s head. Another fun activity is Boone hiding under the slipcovers on the furniture - he thinks he’s hiding – then ambush Toby as he walks by. Toby is a pretty good sport and seems to just take these moments in stride.
Fred, on the other hand being nineteen has neither the patience nor desire to engage in any type of activity with Boone. She – yes, she is a girl and her name is Fred - prefers to be left alone, which of course is something our little guy just can’t seem to do. He of course has to follow her and try to play, in other words make a nuisance out of himself until she has had enough and has to swat him.
Another fun activity for Boone – and one that in all my years as a pet owner have never seen in a cat – is playing in water. He loves sitting on the edge of the bathroom sinks – he’s not allowed on the kitchen sink – while your brushing your teeth or washing up. He will actually get into the sink to play with the running water, which makes it a bit tough sometimes to get done what your trying to do.
Boone came to live with our family after having lost Jasper a wonderful friend we had the privilege of living with for sixteen years. Jasper had a unique personality all his own, he was what I refer to as a Dog-Cat. The kind of cat that has more of the traits of a dog, following you, coming when called, totally the opposite of the normal aloofness that most cats have. Of course Boone can never replace our beloved Jasper, however he does have many similar characteristics the most important being love.
He brought joy back into a broken heart and laughter into our home. For this we will keep buying cute little toys, pooh bear baby blankets to sleep on and what ever else comes to mind.
We love you Boone.
