Thanksgiving - A Time For Family, Good Food & Festive Decor by Bonnie P Carrier
Thanksgiving is just around the corner and will be here before you know it. It’s time to start planning on how to make a memorable day for all the special people in our lives.
Most of us have Thanksgiving traditions that have been followed for years, however if by some chance you’re in the market for something new, we here at Savvy Home Decorating have put together a few ideas.
Table Covering Here is where you’ll need to decide whether or not to use a full tablecloth or just placemats. You may have a tablecloth made just for this particular holiday or one that holds sentimental value. White or cream colored tablecloths work well for very formal settings. A solid fall color or simple patterned tablecloth will give a more casual look to the table.
If you have a beautiful top to your table instead of covering it up, show it off by using placemats and coordinating napkins. Here again use a solid fall color that coordinates with your dinnerware, something make from natural elements or something with a fall pattern.
There are several options for placing your napkins. They of course can be simply folded in half then placed under the forks at each setting. Another option would be to try some type of fancy folding. Below are two simple folds to try.
Ether of these quick folds would be suitable for either a casual or formal table. Both of these easy folds will require a napkin ring, ribbon or raffia tied in a bow to secure the fold.
- SCARF NAPKIN FOLDS Lay napkin flat and grasp center point. Holding the center, let the points fall into folds. Insert into napkin ring.
- ROLLING NAPKIN FOLD Fold napkin in quarters. Set on a diagonal with the folded center portion at the top and all open edges at the bottom. Begin rolling each side toward the center, making 2 long rolls (this will be the back). Insert the roll into a napkin ring and turn over so smooth side is up.

One last idea would be to simply place the napkin in each water glass with the ends facing upwards. Festive napkin rings would help to dress up plain solid colored napkins.
Adding A Centerpiece What you decide to use will largely depend on the size of your dining table. You will want to keep the arrangements in scale with the table and also allow plenty of room for the food. Fall floral arrangements, pumpkins, gourds and candles either used alone or in combination with each other would be perfect choices.
You may already have a traditional centerpiece that is used every year. However, if you’re looking for something new Better Home & Gardens has a variety of ideas that are no only beautiful but easy to put together.
Dinnerware This is of course the final element to bring your Thanksgiving table together. Many of us already have a special set that is used every year. If however you’re just starting out there are a couple of options. One would be to purchase a set that has a pattern with a Thanksgiving theme – turkeys are a common theme - or choose dishes in solid fall colors.
A festive home and table along with delectable mouthwatering food is a big part of the festivities on Thanksgiving, however the most important element is sharing this special day with family and friends.
