Make Your Outdoor Living Area Comfortable With Furniture                       by Bonnie P. Carrier

No matter where you live every one has some type of space outdoors, whether it’s a large wooden deck or a small balcony off your apartment,

there are so many ways to turn it into a wonderful outdoor retreat to entertain friends and family or just simply relax with a cool drink on a hot afternoon.

Think of this outdoor space as an extended room off your home, which means decorate as you would indoors and the first place to start is with furniture.

This could mean a large cedar table with seating for eight, a comfortable wicker rocker for relaxing and enjoying a cool drink or a small bistro table and chairs made just for two.

With the variety of outdoor furniture available you’re guaranteed to find the perfect set to fit your space and needs.

Below you’ll find a list of popular styles and a brief definition.

  • Dining Tables & Chairs                                                                                                             The table size and number of chairs will depend on the amount of space available and the number of people. Tables can be round, oblong, rectangle or square. Choose between wood and metal. The more common wood types are Cedar, Redwood, Pine and Teak. Metals consist of Iron, Aluminum and Steel.
  • Bistro Dinning Sets                                                                                            As this style of table and chairs is small and compact they are perfect for a space with limited room, apartment balconies come to mind. They also make a wonderful spot for an intimate candle light dinner for two. As with the larger dining tables and chairs, Bistro sets are available in a variety of woods or metals.
  • Wicker Sets                                                          A sofa and chairs with comfortable summer print cushions. What could be more perfect for sitting on the porch or patio relaxing with a cool drink? Two common materials used in making this type of furniture are Bamboo and Rattan
  • Adirondack Style                                                            Adirondack Chairs are crafted with time-honored tradition in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Strong and durable, their timeless style will endure for generations.                                                                                                                                  Cedar and Pine are the most common woods used in constructing these wonderful chairs. Choose from a natural finish or painted a color to blend with your outdoor decor.
  • Rockers                                                                                                                                     Who can resist sitting on the front porch in a beautiful rocker and just relaxing while you watch the world go by. Wide spaced slat high backs are probably what come to mind when you visualize a porch rocker. Rockers can be found made of the same materials as other wood furniture, with either slat or cane seats.
  • Picnic Table & Benches                                                                                                          Last but not least, lets not forget the good old American standby, something most of us grew up using - The Picnic Table. Before choosing one you will again need to determine the amount of space you have and the number of people who normally will be using it. Picnic tables can be used either out in the yard or on your deck or patio.

When you choose the right furniture for your space and lifestyle, you’re one step closer to turning an unused outdoor space into a comfortable outdoor living area.
